10 Mother's Day Gift Ideas She'll *Actually* Love
Mother’s Day is coming up fast, folks, and let’s be honest, plenty of us are still scrambling for a great pressie to give the best gals in our lives. You could get her a bunch of flowers – there’s nothing wrong with Mother’s Day flowers – but we can do better, right?! So if you’re ready to absolutely nail this year’s Mother’s Day presents, take a good squiz at this here Mother’s Day gift guide!
When is Mother’s Day 2022, you ask?
Mother’s Day falls on the first Sunday of May every year, so that’s May 8, for all you folks playing without a calendar. (And, of course, you’re more than welcome to show your appreciation for your awesome mama or baby mama on any darn day. She deserves it!)
So, what to buy for mum this year?
There’s a real mix of gift ideas for Mum here, from bling to books, beauty MVPs and more – go wild! For the record, none of these are affiliates/spon/etc. Just pressies I know I’d be excited to get as a nod to the effort it took to push a baby out of my bits.
1. Trinny London BFF SPF 30 Cream, $67.50
Kicking off my Mother’s Day gift guide is a little something I have been obsessed with since I was introduced to it a few months ago. It’s legit my favourite thing… You might remember Trinny Woodall from the show What Not To Wear and while a trying-to-help-but-moderately-shamey TV series like that might not fly these days, the gal has a bloody knack for beauty products. The BFF Cream is the ultimate moisturiser + SPF + sheer coverage to wear every day, on its own or under makeup, and is a true makeup bag essential. Trust me, this tube is worth every penny.
2. Be You Be Free by Shreen El Masry
Okay, okay, I admit, I’m a teeny, tiny bit biased in reco’ing this read as a gift for Mother’s Day because I edited it but it’s genuinely a goodie. If you don’t believe me, just check out some of the 5-star reviews it’s garnering, like, everywhere… A gentle, beautiful guide for anyone wanting to break free from diet culture.
“In a world of constant bombardment of messaging around diets and body image, Shreen El Masry brings a compassionate approach to self care.”
“The book is beautifully designed, easy to read and full of practical activities to use in your own journey.”
3. Deja Marc handwriting necklace, From $170
Okay, I love this and your baby mama will, too. Get a sweet note written in your kid’s hand, send it on over to the clever folks at Deja Marc and have it immortalised into a piece of quality jewellery Mum can love forever. Pick from yellow and rose gold, and silver – you can also get bracelets (and cufflinks if you’re already thinking ahead to Father’s Day). For an even more unique pressie, have a fingerprint imprinted on some bling for Mum. Definitely one to check out!
4. The Lullaby Club ‘avalon’ dress, from $102
It’s their bestseller for a reason, you guys, and I can personally attest to the coolness (and comfort) of this dress. I happen to own this little baby in no less than four colourways and yes, I have every intention of buying more because it is the ultimate wear-anywhere, looks-good-on-everyone piece. Plus, it’s pregnancy and breastfeeding friendly (yeah, I see you ticking all the Mother’s Day gift guide boxes, TLC). Team with boots and a cosy long cardi for winter vibes, slip on a pair of slides in summer – it will be the most versatile thing in Mum’s wardrobe, promise.
5. Edited:Away Intro to Creative Writing, $11
Yeah okay, this is shameless self-promotion but, shit, guys, if I can’t do it here, where can I do it?
6. Morgan Jamieson Layered Moon Long Drop EARRINGS via Live This, $50
Literally everything in this shop is heckin’ great and, truly, I advise you grab a basket (virtual or IRL, the storefront is totally dreamy and 100% worth a visit if you’re in Sydney) and start loading it up with goodies because, oh! There’s nothing bad here. But if I had to pick just ONE Mother’s Day present for for a super-mum, it would be these gorj drop earrings by Morgan Jamieson. Classy and chic but with a splash of colour – loving it. (Although any of the phenom Martha Jean would also big a whole vibe for any mamas out there who who are into a bit of loud ear candy.) Check out Live This’ entire phenom Mother’s Day 2022 gift edit here.
7. ROEMY ‘resort’ EDP, $179 (55ml)
I know, I know – you’d love to take Mum on tropical holiday, stay in a boujie hotel, etc, etc – but if a getaway’s off the cards (me, too), this spritz is the scent of paradise, bottled. With top notes of green fig and bergamot, middle notes of creamed coconut and musk, and bottom notes of amber and blondewood, this fragrance is sensual, sweet and summery. Oh, and for bonus points, sustainability is a top priority at ROEMY. We’re talking sustainable packaging and ingredients, paperless operations, and environmental mindfulness from start to finish. Plus, all the scents are are non-toxic, hypoallergenic, vegan and cruelty-free. Win, win, win.
8. Saint Valentine Amalfi hoops, $135
Honestly I’d be downright chuffed with any little gifties from this beautiful jewellery brand and I truly reckon your mama or baby mama will be too. But if I absolutely have to pick only one piece from this perfectly pretty collection, it would be these gold hoops. They’re simple enough to wear literally everywhere but fancy enough to feel a wee bit spesh when you’re wearing.
9. Dyson airwrap, $799
Okay I know this isn’t a cheap Mother’s Day present but if you’ve got the cash to splash (or a bunch of siblings who want to chuck in), this is The One. Like, the one that an actual engineer from Dyson, aka the guy who comes up with this incredible tech, told me would be his rec if I could only choose one Dyson hair product. (FFIW, Sydney celeb hairstylist Renya Xydis rates the Supersonic Hair Dryer as her top pick – but, as Mr Engineer pointed out, there’s a blow-dryer-esque flat styling brush attachment in the Airwrap box, plus different sized curlers and a round brush, sooo… I know what I’m picking!)
10. Writing workshops, from $55
If there’s a mama in your life who’d love to journey into writing – whether for fun, a side hustle or a complete career 180 – get her started with a writing workshop with Edited:Away. There’s Telling Your Story, where we demystify the memoir-writing process and break it down into easy, digestible steps. There’s Editing Essentials, where we look at how to make writing better (no, it’s not all commas and grammar!). And I have a special bring-a-buddy rate for Journalling For Creativity , where we journey into the ancient practice, explore how it can expand creativity and have a go at a few styles of journalling to better understand how a regular practice can slot into anyone’s life.
